Upgrading

In RO, you may upgrade many armors and all weapons to give them enhanced DEF or ATK (as appropriate). There are both costs and risks involved and this page will show what they in addition to the benefits.

Note: The basis of some of this information is a page on RaguMemo, a jRO fansite. You'll note some differences where they were not quite right or the way it works in jRO is actually different (which is a bit of a first really).

Following is a how to for upgrading:

  • Equip the item to be upgraded. If the class of your character prevents you from wearing it, then you cannot upgrade it. More on the importance of this later.
  • Gather the required upgrade stone and enough Zeny to cover the commission and hold them in your inventory (they cannot be in storage or in a cart).
  • Talk to an upgrade NPC and select the item to be upgraded from the list of the equipment you are wearing. Note the humorous results if you ask for an upgrade to a location that has no armor/weapon.
  • You will be asked to confirm the item to be upgraded and notified of the costs.
  • The game checks if you can cover the cost and if you can, it allows you to proceed. If you can't, the npc will tell you to get the materials and then stop talking to you.
  • If the confirmed item is to be upgraded past the safe limit, then you will be given a warning and a chance to quit without any cost.
  • The attempt will be made and you'll get a forging style animation over your head showing success or failure. The success rates depend on two factors: Item Type/Level and the Weaponry Research skill which adds the same success rates as it does for forging weapons. As only Blacksmiths can get Weaponry Research, it is preferable to use a Blacksmith if at all possible. As Blacksmiths cannot equip every weapon and armor, this makes it much harder to upgrade some items.
  • If you succeeded, then your item will increase by 1 upgrade level and you lose the zeny and required upgrade stone. A normal item becomes +1, a +1 becomes +2 etc. If you fail, you lose your armor/weapon, the upgrade stone and the zeny.
